The Simien Mountains offer some of the finest highland trekking in Africa, with dramatic escarpments, endemic wildlife and warm, generous communities. Here's what to know before you go.
Most treks start at Sankaber and walk west to Geech, then on to Chenek via Imet Gogo. Three to five days is typical.
You'll spend most of the trek above 3,000m. Acclimatise slowly, drink plenty of water, and don't push through headaches.
Gelada monkeys are almost guaranteed near the camps. Walia ibex live on the cliffs and need patience to spot. Lammergeiers and augur buzzards soar overhead.
Layers, hat and gloves, windproof jacket, broken-in boots, headlamp and a good sleeping bag if camping.

Visas, money, SIM cards, safety and what to expect on the ground.
