This five-day journey is designed for travellers who want more than a checklist of tribes. You'll spend unhurried time with Hamer families, watch Karo body-painting at sunrise on a cliff above the Omo River, share coffee with Mursi households, and walk through the valley's most colourful weekly market with a guide who knows every trader by name.
We keep groups small (maximum eight travellers), use local guides from the communities we visit, and build in flexibility: if a ceremony, wedding or market falls during your dates, we rearrange the itinerary so you can be there. All park fees, permits and community payments are included.
A day-by-day look at your journey.
Your guide meets you at Jinka Airport (BCO) holding a name sign, and the pace of the valley takes over immediately — no queues, no rush, just a warm handshake and a short walk to the waiting 4x4. Jinka sits at about 1,400m and is the administrative capital of South Omo: a small, lively town with a busy market, bajaj (tuk-tuks) buzzing along the main road, and a museum dedicated to the region's cultures. After a 10-minute transfer to your lodge you have time to shower, unpack and rest. At 5pm your guide pours Ethiopian coffee from a clay jebena over hot coals and gives a full briefing: the communities you'll meet, cultural etiquette, photography guidelines, what to expect from village visits, and any questions you have. This is also when the route is finalised — if a ceremony, wedding or market has been announced, the itinerary bends around it. Dinner at the lodge is a set menu of Ethiopian classics (injera, shiro, tibs) with international alternatives.
