Pastoralists, fishers and river farmers, the Dassanech live at the southern edge of the Omo Valley.

The Dassanech live in the far south of the valley, around Omorate and the Omo delta near Lake Turkana. Their lives combine cattle herding, fishing and farming on land left by the river's seasonal floods.
When the Omo rises and falls, it leaves fertile soil along the banks. Changes in the river's flow, including from upstream dams, have affected how reliably these floods arrive — something you may hear about directly from families.
Visits usually involve a boat crossing from Omorate. Ask before taking photographs, agree on any fees through your guide, and listen as much as you look.

How to take photographs that are both powerful and respectful in a country full of incredible subjects.
